Messe Essen – investing in the future

Major redevelopment of Messe Essen
Visitors have been coming to the exhibition grounds of MESSE ESSEN on Norbertstraße in Essen-Rüttenscheid since 1913. Back then, around 5,000 square metres of exhibition space were available – today it is one of the largest trade fair centres in Germany: with 110,000 m², it has the ninth-largest exhibition area in the country. Last year, around 1.4 million visitors came to its 50 trade fairs and exhibitions.
Messe Essen is currently being rebuilt in four construction phases while remaining open. The aims: shorter routes for visitors, large, naturally lit halls giving exhibitors ideal conditions to showcase their exhibits, and up-to-date technology across the entire exhibition grounds.
From May 2016 to October 2017, the exhibition centre is getting a new look: a 2,000 m² glass foyer is being built as the new entrance. Two old exhibition halls are also being demolished to make room for the new Hall 6. From October 2017 to April 2018, Halls 4, 4a and 5 are being dismantled, and a new exhibition lounge and the new service centre will be built. The third construction phase is expected to run from April to August 2018. Another five old halls will be demolished while Hall 4 is modernised and Hall 5 is extended with a new building. The final stage involves completing the new Hall 5 building.
Turning the site into one of Europe’s most modern exhibition centres will cost around EUR 90 million. Once it is finished, Messe Essen will hold its own against major German exhibition centres such as Deutsche Messe Hannover (358,913 m²), Messe Frankfurt (358,913 m²) and koelnmesse (284,000 m²) when it comes to modern facilities, technical capabilities and visitor comfort.
The multi-purpose Grugahalle and the Congress Center Essen (CCE) nicely complement what MESSE ESSEN offers, with facilities for congresses, conferences and concerts.
By the way, MESSE ESSEN GmbH keeps interested residents informed about the details of the redevelopment and the individual construction phases in an information pavilion set up specially for this purpose. You can already explore a digital preview of the new exhibition centre there…
