Green Event - The event industry is going green
Sustainable event management was introduced at the 1992 Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio. By integrating sustainability into the consumption and production process, the event marketing sector was included at the same time. However, the idea of sustainability was slower to catch on in the event sector than in other areas.
The term for sustainable events is green meeting or green meeting event, or green event for short. Due to the aspects of sustainability to be considered (social, ecological, economic), a green event is a challenge for the organizers. The spectrum of fields of action to be considered ranges from the necessary travel activities (with their impact on the climate), to the consumption of energy, water, paper, etc., to considerations for minimizing the amount of waste.
Living up to your own corporate social responsibility (CSR) with a green event
The event industry has been forced to integrate the topic of sustainability into events and to organize sustainable events itself. Traditional events such as trade fairs, concerts and congresses are organized sustainably using sustainable means and in accordance with guidelines and directives. In order to bring the topic to the end consumer, trade fairs or similar events are organized at which visitors are sensitized to the topic of sustainability and at which experts in the field give lectures.
In recent years, the number of organizers of sustainable events has increased. According to the European Association of Event Centers, 40 percent (as of 2013) of event venues in Germany have already implemented a sustainable management system. Seals have also been implemented to identify green events. These include, for example, fairpflichtet and Green Globe.
Furthermore, the Meeting Experts Green Award has been presented by the EVVC and the GCB since 2013. The award recognizes sustainable projects from the meetings and congress industry in the categories of energy management, resource conservation, sustainable event, location, hotel, sustainable personnel management and sustainable company. Green events are the future perspective of the event industry and offer even more scope for organizers to combine entertainment and environmental awareness.
