Sustainable team events: One Event – One Tree
As part of its own campaign “One Event – One Tree”, Teamio Event GmbH is backing a reforestation project right on its own doorstep. In the south of Essen – in the Oefte forest district, to be precise – 178 oaks will be planted. What makes it special is that every tree stands for one team event it has delivered. The planting is carried out professionally by the non-profit foundation Stiftung Unternehmen Wald, in cooperation with Regionalverband Ruhr Grün.

Since March of last year, the coronavirus pandemic has posed enormous challenges for society and for many economic actors. The diverse events industry has been particularly hard hit, alongside tourism and the food service sector. Of the 350 in-person events we had planned for the calendar year 2020, we were able to deliver exactly 32. By May last year, though, we were already offering our clients our first virtual event options (digital quiz show and virtual Live Escape Game), and by the end of the year clients could choose from nine options. “Transforming our business model from traditional team building to interactive online team events was a challenge for the whole team – but above all a great success!” says Amit Lal, managing director of the Essen-based event agency. “And that is exactly why we can plant another 178 trees.”
More than 1,000 trees planted
We launched our tree-planting project in 2016 as part of our own sustainability framework and have planted more than 1,000 trees since. The aim is twofold: to safeguard biodiversity and to reduce our own ecological footprint by absorbing CO2. “This initiative has gone down so well that many partners and other companies have already joined in or adapted it for themselves,” says a delighted Jan Lange. “After all, what counts in the end is the overall result!”

The planting is planned for autumn 2021. Together with Stiftung Unternehmen Wald and the local regional association, we will then move the reforestation project in Oefte forward. The lingering devastation caused by storm Ela in 2014 calls for professional reforestation, to maintain the tree population and develop the woodland for the future. Native trees such as the sessile oak and the wild cherry safeguard biodiversity and ensure the planting’s long-term, and therefore sustainable, success.
