Archery: the classic team event
Archery has been around for some 15,000 years, as flint arrowheads found by archaeologists show. It started out purely as a way of hunting, then kept evolving and became ever more important in warfare. The British, for example, were known and feared for their outstanding longbow archers from the 14th century onwards.
Today archery is a popular precision sport worldwide, so it features as a discipline at the Olympic Games too. It first appeared as early as 1900 in Paris. It has been an official Olympic sport since 1972, with a wide range of competitions over different distances.
This sport is about concentration, but also about body control and the ability to repeat movements consistently, as the Deutsche Schützenbund e.V. (DSB) puts it. Blocking out distractions and focusing completely on a single target are key.
The sport now takes many forms, with archers using recurve bows, longbows or bows designed for sport. Traditional, or instinctive, archery is gaining ground again, largely dispensing with technical aids such as sights, pulleys and the like. It offers a stark contrast to the hectic pace of life today, with its constant appointments, urgent emails and deadlines.
